Travelling with family: making the most of school holidays

School holidays are the most expensive time to travel and the only time many families can. That tension is solvable, but it takes a bit of planning.

Book the flights first

Accommodation almost always has more give in it than airfares do. Once school dates are published, flights for those two weeks start climbing and they rarely come back down. Lock the flights, then build the rest around them.

Look one week either side

If your school allows it, shifting by even a few days outside the peak window can change the price meaningfully. It is worth asking the question before you assume the answer.

Fewer stops, longer stays

The instinct is to see as much as possible. With children, the opposite usually produces a better holiday. Two bases over two weeks beats five, and you spend your budget on experiences instead of transfers.

Things worth paying for

  • A room with a separate living space, so bedtimes do not end the evening for everyone.
  • Direct flights where they exist, particularly with younger children.
  • Travel insurance that properly covers the whole family, including cancellation.

Ask about family offers

Kids fly free and kids stay free deals exist across a lot of destinations, but they are tied to specific dates and room types and they are not always advertised. This is the part where talking to an advisor genuinely saves money.

Come and see us with your dates and a rough budget. We will tell you honestly what is achievable.
